50 years of Namak Haram

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1973 drama Namak Haram, which completed 50 years of release, established Amitabh Bachchan as the 'angry young man' of Hindi cinema. The film also brought Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna together again after Anand. Interestingly, Hrishikesh Mukherjee didn't reveal the climax to either Khanna or Bachchan. Rajesh Khanna's character was shown dead in the film, a decision he wanted as his characters had died in previous successful films. Namak Haram played a pivotal role in Bachchan's career, with the dialogue 'Kaun hai woh maai ka laal jisne mere Somu pe haath uthaya' becoming iconic. Bachchan credits Salim-Javed for his angry young man image in Zanjeer and Hrishikesh Mukherjee for Namak Haram. This article also mentions Bachchan's decision to find a new host for KBC.
