Is Nintendo Teaming Up With Nickelodeon?by

Back in the 1990s, one of the biggest names in kids’ entertainment was the studio behind the orange splat – Nickelodeon – perhaps best known for bringing the likes of Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy and Hey Arnold to our screens – and another company who were also at the height of their game twenty years ago were Nintendo. The Japanese firm arguably dominated the early to mid 90s with their trailblazing SNES and Nintendo 64 consoles – and then the Sony PlayStation arrived, changing the game (literally) once again.

Exciting plans are alleged to be on the horizon for both Nick and Nintendo, however, as many are now speculating that an animated movie or series based on a popular video game franchise may be heading our way in the near future. The rumors have started thanks to a podcast hosted on Nick’s YouTube channel with Fred Seibert, the animation genius behind Frederator Studios (perhaps best known for producing Adventure Time for Cartoon Network). In the podcast, Seibert alludes to a project that the studios are working on which is based on a ‘world famous video game’ from the past thirty years. Stating that the project ‘needs to go unnamed’ at this stage, Seibert further states that the brand has been in Frederator’s ‘shop’ for twelve years.

The dots are gradually being joined up – Nintendo had earlier this year announced that they would be interested in bringing their intellectual property to the big screen in one form or another in the near future. Add this to Seibert’s claim that his studio is working with one of the biggest games of the past thirty years and you can understand why so many have jumped to the idea of there being a Mario animation in the works. It wouldn’t be the first of its kind – the plucky plumber’s adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom were last seen on TV around twenty-five years ago. Is it time, therefore, that the moustachioed one made a cartoon comeback?

However, this could all be moot – there have been plenty of huge video games launched during the past thirty years, and while Mario and friends have endured them, who could forget the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, or even the Halo series? It’s hard to say exactly which franchise Seibert is referring to – but it will be an exciting few months ahead as details are sure to trickle out into 2017.
