Game of Thrones is set to return for its landmark seventh season in July on HBO, and while it may only be set to be seven episodes long, it is already setting tongues wagging. Details are still scarce on the series, which, despite the show having been at the mercy of leaks in seasons past, is working well for hardcore fans so far. In an age where we do not wish to be spoiled on casting, possible plot developments and more besides, the fact that matters are being kept so tight-lipped is, arguably, to the benefit of the viewers! That being said, if you don’t want to know about casting that is due to occur in the upcoming series, do not read any further!
It was recently announced this week that pop superstar Ed Sheeran will be making a cameo in the episodes that are due to air this summer. The casting took place partly as a favor to cast member and huge fan Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and due to the fact that there have been musician cameos abound in previous seasons. It certainly seems to be a show which has more than its fair share of celebrity fans and surprise visitors dropping in – and many of its regular stars have gone on to be huge stars in their own right, boosting the film careers of Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Gwendolyn Christie (Brienne of Tarth) in particular.
Ed Sheeran has been rightfully grabbing headlines this week as his latest album, Divide, continues to shatter chart records around the world. He’s also contributed 16 of the week’s top 20 most played songs to the UK charts, meaning that some industry experts have spoken out against potential changes that need to be made to alter the way airplay is ranked. Despite this, it can hardly be denied that Sheeran’s popularity continues to be nothing short of phenomenal – and while his album has received lukewarm reception critically this time around, it’s highly unlikely it will disappear from the charts any time soon.
But who will he play in Westeros? Can we expect him as a Maister, studying alongside Samwell Tarly? As a new member of the Night’s Watch? Or will he be a long-lost character no one’s ever seen or heard from? There’s only one way to find out – tune in this July!
