The First Reviews For Blade Runner 2049 Are In - And They're Looking Goodby

There is always an inherent risk in launching a sequel to a movie several decades after the first – even more so if it’s particularly well-loved or appreciated. When it comes to Blade Runner, adapted from Phillip K Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’, the sci-fi community isn’t that divided – while there may be some discussion over the ending, it seems that fears over the prospect of a sequel were fairly mainstream. However, thankfully, it seems that early reviews for the next instalment, Blade Runner 2049, are rather glowing indeed.

The mantle of director and auteur has been taken up by Arrival’s Denis Villeneuve, who did the fairly unthinkable by taking a sci-fi movie all the way to a ‘Best Picture’ nomination at this year’s Oscars – and, weighing in at around two and a half hours, it’s a trek that only die-hard fans, sci fi buffs or movie critics (stay tuned) may be attracted to sitting through. However, if early collated reviews and thoughts are to be believed, you could well be missing out on some truly breath-taking cinema – regardless of how long your attention will be required for!

Referred to separately as ‘dazzling’, ‘mind-bending’ and ‘colossal’, Blade Runner 2049 holds a ‘Fresh’ accolade on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes already – with just 31 critics having weighed in. At the time of writing, the movie possesses a 97% approval rating – and while many more critics will be likely to lend their thoughts in the coming days and weeks (once again, stay tuned), the site is confident enough to have laid down a fairly positive – if not celebratory – summary of critical opinion.

Rotten Tomatoes’ strapline for the movie currently states: “Visually stunning and narratively satisfying, Blade Runner 2049 deepens and expands its predecessor’s story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right.” Glowing praise indeed – and not bad for a movie that many fans and buffs alike were initially concerned about!

Ryan Gosling and returning Blade Runner actor Harrison Ford make their way onto the big screen in the latest instalment early this October – and, as always, One News Page will be on hand to give you the lowdown and the critical analysis you need to make a decision on whether or not to book an evening off – from the looks of things, however, it seems everyone else may have made their minds up for you!
