Imran Khan accused Pakistan government of 'dismantling democracy' before arrest
Saturday, 5 August 2023 Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan said his party had faced unprecedented "victimisation" and accused the country's government of "dismantling democracy" in an an interview before his latest arrest.
Imran Khan, Pakistan's former prime minister, was reportedly arrested after a trial court on Saturday sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts, also known as the Toshakhana corruption case, and disqualified him from politics for five years.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan (Fazl) criticizes Pakistan's establishment for alleged election rigging and favoritism towards Imran Khan's PTI. He questions the fairness of recent polls and urges the coalition to allow PTI to form the government. Rehman expresses dismay over Pakistan's reliance on international aid, contrasting it with India's progress, and calls for implementing Islamic principles and addressing national debt to avoid stagnation.
