Ground creaking under overbuilt tourist towns

Joshimath, the gateway to Badrinath, is perhaps the most glaring example of this explosive growth. Its population has grown tenfold from around 2,500 in 1976. Early this year, cracks appeared in hundreds of houses in the town as the ground started sinking.
