China justifies latest map, asks India not to ‘over-interpret’
Wednesday, 30 August 2023 China justified its decision to release the latest edition of its map, which continued to show Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as part of that country, calling it a routine exercise and asking India to refrain from “over-interpreting” the move. India had on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with China for the map that was released days after PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Johannesburg.
Prior to the #G20Summit in India, China triggers tensions by unveiling the "2023 edition of the standard map of China." This map depicts Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, South China Sea territories, and Taiwan as part of China's border region.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday as he wrapped up a three-day visit to China dominated by contentious issues and warnings from his hosts of another “downward spiral” in relations. The two met Friday afternoon local time at the Great Hall of the People, an ornate and cavernous building next to Tiananmen Square. Blinken told Xi that President Joe Biden had sent him to China to “seek to deepen areas of cooperation as well as to responsibly manage the differences that we have.” Xi noted that this year is the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, and said the two countries “should be partners rather than adversaries.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed to former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday that external interference would not impede the "family reunion" between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. He emphasised that all issues are open for discussion. Since the Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan in 1949 following a civil war loss to Mao Zedong's communists, no sitting Taiwanese leader has visited China. However, Ma, who served as president from 2008 to 2016, broke this pattern last year, marking the first visit by a former Taiwanese leader to China. This visit, Ma's second, occurs amid heightened military tensions in the region.
