He called it a "new low" in Indian cricket history and stated that sports should not be used to spread hatred. The incident received widespread condemnation, although Tamil Nadu BJP leaders defended the heckling, claiming that the words 'Jai Shree Ram' are deeply rooted in Indian culture. The BJP leaders also argued that Indian cricketers have faced worse treatment in Pakistan.
