Detail magnitude of problem of illegal influx, SC tells govt
The Supreme Court expanded the proceedings to address illegal migration and secure India's north-eastern borders. It directed the Centre to file an affidavit on the magnitude of the problem and remedial measures to stop migration from Bangladesh and deportation of migrants. This intervention highlights the resentment of the original inhabitants of Assam. It is the second time the SC has addressed this issue. The court asked for updated data on illegal migrants, steps taken to deal with illegal immigration, and progress in border fencing.
