1,081 sewer deaths since 1993, relief paid in 925 cases
Tuesday, 26 December 2023 Out of the 1,081 sewer deaths reported in India, 925 cases have received compensation, while 115 cases are still awaiting compensation. The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) shared this data in response to the parliamentary committee's report on the 'Demands for Grants (2023-24)' of the ministry. The committee emphasized the need for states and Union Territories to ensure the payment of Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of sewer workers who die while on duty, as per the Supreme Court's 2014 judgment.

Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
