Ghaziabad renaming clears corporation vote 98-2, Dudheshwar Nagar added as contender

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 10 January 2024
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation board has approved a proposal to rename the NCR district, with the options being Gajnagar, Harnandi Nagar, and a new addition, Dudheshwar Nagar. The names will be forwarded to the state government, which may suggest additional options. The final decision rests with the Union home ministry. The move received widespread support, except from two councillors who opposed it. The renaming initiative was driven by calls from Hindu outfits and Mahant Narayan Giri. Critics, including Congress's Ajay Sharma and SP's Aadil Malik, argue it is a diversion from more pressing issues. BJP councillor Sanjay Singh emphasized the longstanding demand for the name change, comparing it to previous city renamings. The process involves approvals from various stakeholders and culminates with a gazette notification by the state government.
