Centre to SC: For 73 years, ECs appointed exclusively by government

Responding to objections against the selection of election commissioners (ECs) by a panel consisting of the Prime Minister, a Cabinet minister, and the leader of the opposition, the government informed the Supreme Court that historically, ECs have been appointed solely by the government without any specific legislation. The government highlighted that the Supreme Court had only established a temporary process for EC selection due to a legislative gap.
