Hurricane Hilary grows rapidly off Mexico. Rare tropical storm watch issued for California.
Friday, 18 August 2023 Category 4 Hurricane Hilary is approaching Mexico's Pacific coast with winds near 145 mph. Though expected to weaken, it will still be a hurricane when approaching Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Saturday night and a tropical storm when approaching southern California on Sunday - the area’s first tropical storm in 84 years. The storm could bring floods, mudslides and tornadoes. The National Hurricane Centre has issued its first ever tropical storm watch for much of the region.
