The New York City police department plans to use surveillance drones to monitor large gatherings and parties over the Labor Day weekend. The move has faced criticism from privacy and civil liberties advocates who argue that it violates existing laws on police surveillance. New York City has increasingly been relying on drones for policing purposes, with the police department using them 124 times this year for public safety or emergency purposes.
