Right-wing tanks stopgap bill, US govt stares at shutdown

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's attempt to pass legislation to prevent a government shutdown was thwarted by hard-line conservatives. The bill, which included spending cuts and immigration restrictions, was bound to fail as several Republicans had already stated their opposition. Although critical government services would continue, a shutdown would result in the closure of national parks and could cause disruptions to infrastructure improvements.
