EU ministers meet in Kyiv to support Ukraine amid signs of strain in allies
Monday, 2 October 2023 EU foreign ministers met in Kyiv to show their support for Ukraine after a pro-Russian candidate won an election in Slovakia and the US Congress excluded war aid to Ukraine from its spending bill. Despite these setbacks, Ukraine's foreign minister stated that they still feel supported by the US, as they understand the importance of the situation. The meeting in Kyiv was seen as historic, but comes at a challenging time for Ukraine as their military counter-offensive has been slower than expected. The EU remains committed to supporting Ukraine, with a proposed spending package of up to 5 billion euros for 2024.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the foreign ministers’ first joint meeting outside EU borders sent a signal that EU support is “unwavering” and underscored the EU’s commitment to Ukraine.
