An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot, Joseph Emerson, allegedly had a "mental breakdown" and attempted to shut down the engines of a flight. He was arrested after the plane landed safely in Portland. Emerson now faces charges including 83 counts of attempted murder. Neighbors described him as a devoted father and a great guy, expressing shock at the news. He is currently being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
