Friday, 27 October 2023 Once viewed as a top Communist Party leadership contender, Li Keqiang was sidelined in recent years by China President Xi Jinping, who tightened his grip on power and steered the world's second-largest economy in a more statist direction.
China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says they "deeply" mourn the death of former premier Li Keqiang, in Beijing's first public comment on his passing. Li had a heart attack on 26 October and passed away in Shanghai, state-run news agency Xinhua says.
