Poppy growth down 95% in Afghanistan since Taliban ban: UN

IndiaTimes Sunday, 5 November 2023
Poppy cultivation and opium production in Afghanistan have decreased by 95% since the Taliban banned the crop, according to a UN report. The ban, implemented in April 2022, has led to a collapse in poppy cultivation from 233,000 hectares to 10,800 hectares. Opium production has also plummeted from 6,200 tons to 333 tons. However, the sudden contraction of the opium economy has had humanitarian consequences for rural communities, as farmers have had to turn to less lucrative alternative crops. The loss of income is expected to impact Afghanistan's struggling economy further.
