Niger's junta revokes key law that had slowed migration for Africans desperate to reach Europe
Tuesday, 28 November 2023
Niger's junta has revoked a 2015 migration law aimed at curbing migrant smuggling through Niger to Europe. The law's convictions will be cancelled, and those convicted will be considered for release. This move adds to the political tensions between Niger and EU countries following the July coup. The Agadez region in Niger serves as a gateway for migrants heading to Europe, but it has also become a profitable route for smugglers. The law empowered security forces to prosecute smugglers, but it also led migrants to take more dangerous routes.
