US mulls task force to guard Red Sea ships from Iranian proxy forces

The US is discussing with its allies the establishment of a naval task force to protect ships in the Red Sea following recent attacks on commercial vessels. The attacks are believed to be an extension of Israel's conflict with Hamas, carried out by Iranian-sponsored proxy forces. Jake Sullivan, President Biden's NSA, suggested that patrols by the task force could be an appropriate response to these incidents. The mission would be similar to naval task forces in the Gulf and off the coast of Somalia, which ensure the safety of ships from Iranian aggression and piracy, respectively.
