In Israel, US defence chief to look to next phase of Gaza war

IndiaTimes Monday, 18 December 2023
US defense secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Israel to discuss Israel's transition from high-intensity war in Gaza to a more limited conflict. Austin supports Israel's right to defend itself but is increasingly concerned about civilian casualties. He will meet with Israeli leaders to discuss planning for the next phase of the war and the eventual transition. Both the US and Israel agree on the need for a transition, but differ on the timeline. Austin, with his experience in military campaigns, can provide insights on preventing military reconstitution of Hamas.
