Swiss hard right chief stepping down after elections triumph

Marco Chiesa steps down as head of Swiss People's Party; SVP regrets the decision and thanks Chiesa for his contribution. Chiesa led the SVP to its third-best result in history, winning 28% of the vote and additional seats in parliament. Chiesa will not stand as a candidate when his term ends on March 23. The SVP's campaign focused on 'mass immigration' and 'cancel culture'. Chiesa's departure will be followed by the selection of a new party leader on March 23 in Bern. The Swiss government makes decisions by consensus and collective responsibility.
