Hong Kongers in Taiwan firmly support the ruling party after watching China erode freedoms at home

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 9 January 2024
Many Taiwanese immigrants from Hong Kong, witnessing the erosion of civil liberties at home, support Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the upcoming presidential election. They prefer a party committed to preserving Taiwan's de facto independence and democratic values. Despite some disappointment with Taiwan's immigration policies, the immigrants remain steadfast in their support for the DPP due to its firm stance on autonomy from Beijing. The DPP's primary competitor, the Nationalist Party, concurs with Beijing's view that both sides belong to a single Chinese nation.
