This Week In History: July 17 - July 23by

Strap yourself in tight and get ready to hit 88 miles per hour – we’re taking the One News Page time machine back through the years to reminisce on some of the biggest world events that have occurred this week – so grab a packed lunch and get ready to go all misty-eyed!

July 17th 1980 – Ronald Reagan Accepts Republican Nomination
This was the moment where it seemed that you didn’t necessarily need to come from a political background to run for president – Ronald Reagan, then best-known as a film star in the US, accepted the nomination to run for US President 37 years ago. The late President Reagan would become an iconic figure in US politics and in the Cold War that reverberated throughout the decade.

July 18th 1925 – Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ Published
An historically important yet infamous autobiographical account, this book would go on to provide the backbone for much of the Nazi regime and the dictator’s actions leading up to the Second World War.

July 19th 2007 – ‘Mad Men’ Debuts on NBC
The long-running US period drama based around a fictional advertising agency debuted ten years ago this week – and it’s only been off the air two years, having made household names out of stars Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.

July 20th 1837 – London’s First Intercity Railway Station Opens
We’re going back a whopping 180 years for this one – as Euston Station celebrates a milestone birthday. This first multi-city link station provided travellers with access to London and Birmingham – linking the midlands and The City together in one terminus for the first time.

July 21st 1969 – Neil Armstrong Takes Humanity’s First Steps on The Moon
48 years ago this week, humanity finally reached the Moon – as Neil Armstrong set foot on its surface and said those immortal words (you know the ones!). The world watched with baited breath as – in the early hours of the morning – space travel changed forever.

July 22nd 1994 – O.J. Simpson Pleads Not Guilty to Murder
Stating that he was ‘100% not guilty’ of the murder of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and friend Ron Goldman, it was 23 years ago this week that we saw the ex-football star and actor take the stand – and it would be a case that would provide drama for years to come.

July 23rd 1877 – Telephones Come to Hawaii
A rather odd one to finish, but an important trip regardless – Hawaii this week celebrates 140 years of the telephone, as both telephone and telegraph lines were set-up in-state on July 23rd 1877. We may not be using telegraph any more – but these lines would really stand the test of time!

Come back to us for more tripping through time next Monday!
