This Week In History: October 9th - October 15thby

What has history taught us? All kinds of things – some important lessons, other things – not so essential. Regardless, we keep things on record for a reason – and while it’s rumored that we may have in fact lost 97% of all recorded history due to the ravages of time, we’re making sure we’re keeping track of it all from here on in. Here’s this week’s trip down memory lane – to see what went down years, decades and maybe even centuries ago this week.

October 9th, 2006 – North Korea Tests First Nuke
Offering frightening echoes 11 years on, 2006 was the year that the reclusive Pyongyang allegedly started undertaking nuclear testing – and over a decade later, the world is still unclear on where this will all end up.

October 10th, 1899 – The Modern Bicycle Gets Patented
Say happy birthday to your two-wheeled friend – as US inventor and engineer Isaac R Johnson first claimed patent on the modern bicycle frame almost 120 years ago this week.

October 11th, 1975 – ‘Saturday Night Live’ Debuts on NBC
The host-cycling, irreverent but always relevant comedy and sketch show celebrates its 42nd birthday this week – though its first host, George Carlin, is sadly no longer with us.

October 12th, 1999 – The Six Billionth Human is Born
Today is the birthday of Bosnian Adnan Mevic, who is the sixth billionth person to have been born – a huge milestone, and he himself celebrates his own – his 18th.

October 13th, 2016 – Bob Dylan Wins the Nobel Prize for Literature
Yes, it really is a year ago – Dylan was a controversial winner in that it wasn’t immediately clear whether he’d even accept the award, or show up to receive it!

October 14th, 1066 – The Battle of Hastings
Why is it that the Battle of Hastings is always an event people remember by year alone? Regardless – William the Conqueror famously overthrew Harold II on this day 951 years ago – a historical moment that kids everywhere have been hearing about ever since.

October 15th, 1951 – ‘I Love Lucy’ Debuts on CBS
Arguably one of the most important comic creations to ever appear on US network TV, Lucille Ball’s iconic to-and-fro with co-star Desi Arnaz first debuted on CBS 66 years ago this week.

Don’t forget to come back next week to see what else history has in store to show us – and who knows – we might even come back a little bit enlightened all the same.
