The United Nations has warned of an impending humanitarian crisis as Iraq launches a campaign to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic State. The UN Refugee Agency said it had stepped up efforts to assist hundreds of thousands of people displaced from Iraq’s second-largest city. Speaking in Baghdad on Monday, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi sought assurances from the Iraqi government that civilian protection would be “part of the military strategy” for retaking Mosul. The organization has warned that the offensive could force an additional one million people to flee.
