Hundreds of fans have gathered at Chapecoense’s stadium, the Condá Arena in the city of Chapecó, to mourn the players and staff killed in a plane crash in Colombia.
Brazilian President Michel Temer announced three days of national mourning and mobilsed the foreign affairs and defense ministries to assist families of the victims.
“It’s a sad day,” announced the Brazilian President. Unfortunately, all we can do, beyond crying for those who have left us, is to arrange federal government support for the families who are in mourning.”
The South American football federation suspended all games and other activities following the crash.
It was Colombia’s worst air accident since more than 160 people on board an American Airlines flight died near Cali in 1995.
