CNN reports that the president made the announcement during a visit to lands surrounding one of the world's natural wonders, the Grand Canyon.

The area's new designation as a national monument protects it from potential uranium mining.

According to officials, the measure also protects existing permits for grazing and mining, while also supporting hunting and fishing in the area.

The area, now protected as a national monument, covers about 917,000 acres of public land.

The announcement was made at Red Butte, which is part of the new Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.

Many of us have worked for decades to safeguard our Grand Canyon homelands from desecration at the hands of extractive, harmful operations like uranium mining, and today, with the designation of Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, we see these lands permanently protected at last.
