A Russian military transport plane carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, six crew and three people accompanying them crashed on Wednesday morning in Russia’s Belgorod region near Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry said.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m.
It was also not known if anyone survived.
The authorities were investigating the cause of the crash, and a special military commission was on the way to the crash site, the Defense Ministry said.
Amid a cabinet reshuffle by President Putin, a senior Defense Ministry official, Lt. Gen. Yury Kuznetsov, was arrested on bribery charges, highlighting a crackdown on corruption within Russia's military. Kuznetsov faces severe charges, with authorities uncovering a significant sum of cash and luxury items. Putin's replacement of Sergei Shoigu as defence minister and the nomination of Andrei Belousov signal potential further purges within the ministry. Shoigu's deputy's recent arrest has raised speculation about Shoigu's future, amidst scrutiny over Russia's military strategy in Ukraine, where Ukrainian resistance has proven formidable, causing setbacks for Russian forces. The implications of these internal power shifts remain uncertain as Russia navigates the ongoing conflict.

Russian authorities reported that at least eight people were injured in Ukrainian attacks in and around the western Russian city of Belgorod. The assaults occurred as the nation commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of the Belgorod region disclosed on Telegram, "The city of Belgorod and the Belgorod district faced an air attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, resulting in direct hits on residential apartment buildings and vehicles." He further stated, "Preliminary reports indicate eight casualties, including seven adults and one child." In response to the heightened tensions, Belgorod, along with other Russian regions bordering Ukraine, has scrapped its military parade and other Victory Day celebrations.
