Europe's centre-right party clears path for von der Leyen’s re-election, despite some objection
The European People’s Party (EPP) on Thursday confirmed Ursula von der Leyen as its lead candidate for June’s European elections, clearing the path for her second term at the European Commission’s helm.
Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled plans to set up a European Democracy Shield to protect the EU from malign foreign interference if she secures a second term at the helm of the Commission.

Prior to her Monday meetings with Italian political leaders, von der Leyen was a guest on national TV, where she spoke about the need to defend Ukraine against Russia's aggression to preserve peace in Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron clarified on Monday that the US and its allies have no intentions of seeking regime change in Russia. However, Paris remains committed to supporting Kiev in its ongoing conflict with Moscow, pledging continued aid for as long as necessary.
