Elon Musk Releases Tesla Patents for Free – in the Name of Climate Change

Elon Musk Releases Tesla Patents for Free – in the Name of Climate Changeby 👩‍💻 Stephanie Boyd

While 2018 may well have been a year of mixed news as far as Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk is concerned – at least with regard to his car firm’s financial performance and in terms of certain comments he’s made on Twitter over the past 12 months – but he’s looking to start the New Year with a positive outlook. In a recent online post, the outspoken CEO announced that he was to release Tesla’s unique patents in an attempt to help combat climate change.

According to the Economic Times, Musk made his carmaker’s tech freely available to the public in a move which is considered ground-breaking – if yet rather brave. “Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport,” the CEO advised. “If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.”

“Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars being poured out of the world’s factories everyday,” Musk continued to tweet. “All our patent are belong to you,” he concluded, referencing a classic internet meme taken from the videogame Zero Wing.

Musk has long since been an outspoken character, unafraid to speak his mind and challenge boundaries. This latest move is classic Musk – choosing to reveal his company’s secrets in an effort to blaze a whole new trail – and in the interest of the greater good for our planet. The entrepreneur has, despite having initially filed patents for Tesla, since felt that many filings only ‘stifle progress’ – in the sense that they only serve corporate gain as opposed to the greater good.

Tesla may have had something of a rocky road in recent months, but car production maintains steady. Musk remains unafraid of competition rising up with the reveal of his patents. “We believe that applying the open-source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position,” he confirmed.

Quite how the news will affect the stock market, however, remains to be seen. Tesla’s shareholders have voiced some concerns over the firm’s performance in 2018, and prices have dipped further even this week alone. Musk may have done the world some good – but what about Tesla itself?
