Is John Travolta's Latest Movie Set to Score a Rotten Tomatoes 0%?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Travolta's latest film gets rotten reviews --

It’s a fairly safe statement to make that John Travolta has a varied career, and one which has seen him perform in everything from gritty thrillers to family friendly pictures, voicing cartoon dogs to hamming it up in drag – it’s safe to say his scoresheet is peppered with great performances. However, as his latest picture appears to be proving, a career full of great performances doesn’t always mean that you’re going to avoid signing up for the occasional dud. While critics don’t seem to be completely laying the blame for the lead’s performance in his latest picture, Gotti – thus far, at the time of writing, it seems that it may struggle to achieve a positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, at present, it’s sitting on a rare – and rather disastrous – 0%. According to Entertainment Weekly, Travolta has had the unfortunate distinction of appearing in at least two other 0% movies – albeit retroactively scored – Look Who’s Talking Now and Staying Alive.

For those uninitiated, Rotten Tomatoes pools critical opinion on movies and TV from a variety of published and authorized sources. The final ‘Tomatometer’ score is offered as a percentage – the higher the score, the more positive reviews, on average, the movie or show received from critics polled. It’s perhaps not the best gauge of a film’s actual quality – arguably – but it does give an idea of how well – or how poorly – some pictures are being received. The Emoji Movie, for example, coasted on a 0% rating until more reviews were pooled – though it still struggled to get much higher. If a movie falls below 50% on the Tomatometer, it’s classed as ‘Rotten’ – a dud.

Gotti, an ambitious biopic about the infamous gangster of the same name, is not doing very well with critics at all – with a 0% rating currently on Rotten Tomatoes and with a 30 score on Metacritic, some critics are describing the film as ‘incoherent’, or ‘almost laughable’ – hardly high praise! Things, however, could change. The Rotten Tomatoes score is currently only based on 20 reviews, and with big movies often pooling ratings up into the hundreds, there could still be a chance that Travolta’s latest claws some integrity back. Perhaps the first 20 reviews were unusually harsh? In any case – 0% is rarely good news – so let’s see how this one plays out.
