Oscars 2019: Who Won the Big Awards?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

We’ve just seen the biggest event in the Hollywood calendar come to pass, and as always, there were a number of upsets and surprises. The Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars, celebrates the biggest and best movies of the past year, and it’s also a great chance for us to remember some of the brilliant people from the entertainment world whom we lost in the past twelve months.

This year’s Oscars was the first for some time without a formal host, and this generally went down well with viewers. As such, each award was presented by a different personality, and the process seemed swifter than usual despite there being a new policy on not giving awards out during commercial breaks. The biggest awards were given out to some truly deserved names and titles – let’s break down a few of them.

Best Picture went to Green Book, Peter Farrelly’s period piece starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, who also picked up Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The movie appeared to come out of left field – as many had assumed either Roma or The Favourite would sweep most categories.

It was a very good night for Black Panther, with the movie having picked up awards for Costume Design and Production Design. Elsewhere in superhero movies, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse picked up Best Animated Feature, beating back likely winners in Disney and Pixar.

Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite, while Rami Malek too picked up his first Oscar for his portrayal of the legendary singer Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Certainly, it was a very Queen-themed evening, with the band and Adam Lambert opening the show, and with the movie picking up two further awards on the night.

Spike Lee picked up his first Oscar in his long directorial career, having been acknowledged for BlacKkKlansman via the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Lady Gaga et al picked up a gong for the song ‘Shallow’ from A Star is Born, which had previously been tipped to win more on the evening.

However, it seems that this was an evening for celebrating more than just raw talent – but for diversity, too. Did Green Book deserve the ultimate accolade? Let us know in the comments below. In the meantime, here’s a rundown of all the major awards from the evening.
