Netflix cancels House of Cards - But not as a result of the Spacey allegations

Allegations in Hollywood surrounding sexual abuse – attempted or otherwise – continue to reverberate well into this week, with actor and theatre director Kevin Spacey having responded to allegations of attempted assault by fellow actor Anthony Rapp when he was a minor. The allegations going public in the media ensured that Spacey would make a public apology and, simultaneously, the star revealed that he was now identifying as a gay man . While such allegations are still being pored over, some high profile homosexual stars have remarked that Spacey’s coming out was particularly ill-timed in line with his response to allegations. Stars such as Rosie O’Donnell took to Twitter to mark their distaste – as it seemed further rumblings were occurring over on Netflix.

The hugely popular House of Cards – the Netflix show in which Spacey stars as underhanded fictional US politician Frank Underwood – will not be renewed after its sixth season to air next year. However, while some may assume that the decision to cancel the show resides on allegations currently levelled against Spacey – Guardian Australia confirmed that Netflix representatives had been in touch to advise that the move to cancel House of Cards was made months ago. It is, however, amidst chaotic headlines regarding Spacey that the network and production company have decided to advise it will not be returning after 2018. It was also confirmed that Spacey was no longer working on-set.

Kevin Spacey is a world-renowned actor and one who is currently facing scorn in Hollywood as Anthony Rapp’s claims appear to have once again opened a few eyes on rumors circulating about the actor’s private life which have been reverberating for considerable years. With the Spacey allegations being relatively fresh news, this story may change soon after this piece is published – meaning that we will of course keep readers updated on any developments.

Rapp, currently one of the main stars in another Netflix show – Star Trek Discovery - alleges that Spacey made sexual advances toward him when he (Rapp) was 14 years old, over 30 years ago. Spacey responded with a Twitter-based apology, through which he referred to the incident – if he had remembered it – as ‘deeply inappropriate drunken behavior’.

The Spacey allegations come to light as a case against former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein continues to stack up – and as more and more voices in Hollywood feel the time to be right to come clean about a number of buried secrets.
