In a Channel 4 News exclusive, the Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin told Cathy Newman a Royal Navy destroyer had gone 3 kilometres into Russian territorial waters, violating a 1980s agreement on the prevention of incidents at sea. Asked whether the UK is telling “barefaced lies” over the incident with HMS Defender, as reportedly alleged by Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Well, they’re the bear.“That’s not my information and my understanding is that the carrier strike group proceeded in the way you would expect through international waters and in accordance with the law.”

A Russian patrol ship and fighter jet have reportedly fired warning shots towards a British destroyer in the Black Sea. The HMS Defender is a warship built for the Royal Navy. The Interfax, which is an independent Russian news agency, quoted the defence ministry as saying that this HMS Defender entered Russian territorial waters near Crimea.
