Monday, 16 December 2019 Mamata Banerjee on Monday led the first of her three-day showdowns against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, daring the Modi government to “dislodge my govt or send me to jail” from a massive rally in central Kolkata. She also conveyed her dismay over Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s “frequent tweets and press briefings” and sought his “cooperation” to maintain peace.
West Bengal Congress President Somen Mitra passed away at a Kolkata hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital around 17 days back due to heart and kidney related ailments. Hospital sources told new agencies that Mitra died following a cardiac arrest around 1:30 am on Thursday. Mitra's political career began during the 1960s as a student leader and spanned over five decades. Mitra became an MLA from Sealdah Assembly in 1972 constituency and represented it seven times. Known to be a master strategist, Mitra rose quickly in the ranks of the Congress to become one of the most popular party leader in the state. Mitra, who went on to become three-time president of the Congress' West Bengal unit from 1992-1996, 1996-1998 and then again from September 2018, was instrumental in clocking the best tally of 82 seats against the Left Front in the 1996 assembly polls.Tributes poured in for the Congress leader from leaders across the political spectrum. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi were among the top leaders who paid their respects to Mitra. West Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankar on condition of education in state said that education in West Bengal is politically caged. He said, "Education is soul of society as it passes from a generation to another. It's unfortunate that in our state education is politically caged and controlled. Political grip on education is tightening, it will hurt students, education scenario and society in large."

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been discharged from hospital after recovering from COVID-19. He was discharged from Bhopal's Chirayu Hospital on August 05. Speaking to ANI on Ram Temple, CM Chouhan said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of Ram Temple today in Ayodhya. The 'mahayagya' which started 500 years ago, is culminating today." "The willpower and resolve shown by PM Narendra Modi has today made him the tallest leader of India in the last 500 years," he added. MP CM Shivraj had tested positive for the disease on July 25. The hospital has advised him to isolate himself at home and self monitor his health for further 7 days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ayodhya on August 5 morning ahead of the mega Ram Temple fest. He was received at the airport by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
