Friday, 24 January 2020 A political slugfest broke out in Maharashtra over home minister Anil Deshmukh's allegation that phones of Congress-NCP leaders were tapped by the previous BJP regime during 2019 Lok Sabha and assembly polls as ex-chief minister Devendra Fadnavis stoutly rejected the charge on Friday.
The wreath laying ceremony of slain soldier Naik Satai Bhushan Rameshrao was performed in Nagpur on November 16. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh paid him last respects. He was honoured by several Army officials. Naik Satai Bhushan Rameshrao lost his life during ceasefire violation by Pakistan at LoC on November 13.
The Bombay High Court has rejected the interim bail plea of Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami. ‘No case has been made out for us to exercise our extraordinary jurisdiction,’ a division bench of the High Court said. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Govwernor Bhagat Sigh Koshyari spoken to the state home minister Anil Deshmukh and conveyed his concern for Arnab’s health and security. He also urged the minister to allow Arnab’s family members to meet and speak to him. Goswami and two others were arrested by Alibaug police on November 4 in connection with the suicide of architect-interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues by companies of the three accused. Arnab Goswami was initially kept at a local school which is designated as a COVID-19 quarantine centre for the Alibaug prison. He was shifted to the Taloja jail in Raigad district on Sunday after allegedly being found using a mobile phone while in judicial custody. Heavy police is deployed outside Alibaug Police station on Nov 04 as Chief Editor of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami was brought here by police. Goswami said, "I have been beaten by the police." Mumbai Police has detained him today. Arnab alleged Mumbai Police assaulted his mother-in-law, father-in-law, son and wife. While Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh said, "No one is above the law. Maharashtra Police will work as per the law."
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on December 02 said that Maharashtra BJP leaders should not do politics over 'Azaan', and should also stop its 'tamasha' that Shiv Sena has left Hindutva. "Maharashtra BJP leaders are doing politics over 'Azaan'. If any of Shiv Sena's party workers said that crowding should be avoided in places like Mumbai and suggested that 'Azaan' should be recited at home, this is for safety purpose and nothing is politics in it. Even Prime Minister has said there should be no overcrowding at religious places during COVID-19. Those saying Shiv Sena has left Hindutva, should stop this 'tamasha'. They should talk about unemployment, GDP etc," said Sanjay Raut.
Actor Deepika Padukone was seen leaving for a movie shoot in Maharashtra's Mumbai. Her husband and Bollywood peer Ranveer Singh dropped her off at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai on December 1. Subsequently, Deepika was seen taking a yacht ride with actor Siddhant Chaturvedi. The two are shooting for Shakun Batra's new film which also features Ananya Panday. Farmers’ protest against the centre’s farm bills have now entered the 7th day. The protest at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border led to the closure of a key route connecting the national capital with the state. Two more border points connecting the national capital with Gurgaon and Jhajjar-Bahadurgarh were also closed as precautionary measures. Farmers maintained that would continue their protests for as long as it takes. Talks between three Union ministers and farmer groups ended in a stalemate on Tuesday evening after they rejected the government's suggestion of a new committee to look into the issues. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the Modi government over the protests by farmers against the new laws. ‘They said farmers' income will double. What they did- increased their friends income four times while farmers' income will be halved. Government of lie, loot and of suit boot,’ Rahul Gandhi tweeted. Congress workers and a group of farmers engaged in a verbal spat at Nirankari ground in Burari. Delhi Congress wing is providing tea and refreshment to the farmers, who are protesting against Centre's three farm laws. However, Congress workers alleged that the protestors were from AAP. The group of farmers, who indulged into a verbal spat with Congress party demanded to remove banners of any political party.
The Shiv Sena was and will always remain "Hindutvawadi" and does not need a certificate on its commitment to the ideology from anyone, the party's Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Raut, said on Tuesday. He made the remarks while interacting with reporters after paying tribute to Shiv Sena founder the late Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park in Dadar here on the latter's death anniversary. The Shiv Sena, which snapped ties with long-standing saffron ally BJP last year, heads the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra with the NCP and the Congress as partners. "Our Hindutva need not be certified by any other party. We have been hardcore Hindutvawadi, are so today and will be so tomorrow too... whenever the country needs it, the Shiv Sena will come to the fore with the sword of Hindutva," Raut said. A fresh case was filed against Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami, hours after his arrest. Maharashtra police accused Goswami of resisting arrest and invoked Sections 353, 504, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against him in the new First Information Report (FIR). He was arrested by police on November 4 in an abetment to suicide case. Interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud were found dead in May 2018. In an alleged suicide note, Goswami was named along with two other people - Feroz Shaikh and Nitesh Sarda. They were accused of not paying Naik dues worth Rs 5.4 crore. The Bharatiya Janata Party has come out in Goswami's support, accusing the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra of political vendetta. Watch the full video for more.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the opposition over the farmer protests. While addressing a public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, PM Modi said that those people who cheated farmers for several decades have now lost power and are spreading lies and fear in the minds of the farmers. ‘These same people have in the past played tricks with farmers in the name of MSP, loan waiver and fertiliser subsidy,’ PM Modi said. He added that his government is committed to increasing the income of farmers. ‘The new agricultural laws have been brought in for benefit of the farmers. We will see and experience benefits of these new laws in the coming days,’ he added. PM Modi said that it is natural for some farmers to have questions and added that they were skeptical as they had been cheated in the past. The attack comes as thousands of farmers are gathered at the entry points of the national capital, seeking the repeal of the three laws. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha by-election as an NDA (National Democratic Alliance) candidate in Patna on December 02. He was accompanied by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. He said, "Sushil Modi has our full support." Voting for Rajya Sabha by-election is scheduled on December 14. The seat was left vacant after demise of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader and former union minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
