People rushed to tea shops to keep themselves warm. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), minimum temperature was recorded at 6 degrees and maximum temperature at 17 degrees.
Specially-abled people celebrated World Braille Day in Assam's Dibrugarh on Jan 04. The day is marked remembering the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille. A massive fire broke out in the office premises of the directorate of land records and settlement of Tripura government in Agartala on January 04. 9 fire fighters reached the spot and doused the fire. Rooms gutted in fire mainly had old records and maps. West Tripura district DM said that no valuable records were destroyed in the fire. Reason behind the fire is still unknown, investigation is underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Light House Projects (LHPs) under Global Housing Technology Challenge-India on January 01 via video conferencing. A controversy has erupted over a helicopter installation placed near an iconic statue at the Shangumugham beach in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. Near the 100-foot-long 'Jalkanyaka' or mermaid statue made by artist Kanayi Kunhiraman a helicopter installation was placed by the state tourism department a few months ago. Critics slammed the move as an insult to the mermaid statue, with even the artist calling the government insensitive. Amid the rising scare of Bird flu, also known as avian influenza poultry business across the country has witnessed a massive dip. Outbreak of the disease has created reluctance among the people to purchase poultry products. Sale and transportation of poultry has been restricted in epicentres of bird flu. Shopkeepers in Thiruvananthapuram complained of poor sales of chicken. Though, mutton sales observed a raise as the costing mounted to Rs 800 per kilogram. In Kerala, 25,000 odd birds have died due to the bird flu outbreak in the state. In addition to this, 50,935 birds have been culled to stop the spread of the bird flu.
22nd session of the Kerala Legislative Assembly began in Thiruvananthapuram on January 08. Oppositions created ruckus when Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan delivered his address. While speaking at Assembly, Kerala Governor said, "I am doing my constitutional duty. It is expected that no obstruction shall be created while the governor is performing his constitutional duty."
