Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off eight trains connecting Gujarat's Statue of Unity in Kevadia with different regions of the country through video conferencing on January 17. Narendra Modi said that for the first time it is happening that several trains are flagged off for reaching one particular city. PM Modi further informed that one of the trains flagged off on January 17 will originate at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Railway Station. He further said that it is a pleasant coincidence that January 17 is also observed as birth anniversary of MGR. Tripura observed 43rd Kokborok Day with great fervor and grand colorful procession. Kokborok Day is celebrated in the state every year on 19th January to commemorate its recognition of 'Kokborok' as an official language in 1979. Kokborok is a native language of Tripura spoken for thousands of years among the Tripuri community. The main program was organized at the Umakanta mini stadium in Agartala. Donned in traditional attires; hundreds of youth from different indigenous communities of Tripura attended the festival. Tamil Nadu health minister C Vijayabaskar voluntarily took the vaccine Covaxin at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. The mega COVID-19 vaccination drive began in India on January 16 (Saturday).
A controversy has erupted over a helicopter installation placed near an iconic statue at the Shangumugham beach in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. Near the 100-foot-long 'Jalkanyaka' or mermaid statue made by artist Kanayi Kunhiraman a helicopter installation was placed by the state tourism department a few months ago. Critics slammed the move as an insult to the mermaid statue, with even the artist calling the government insensitive. Amid the rising scare of Bird flu, also known as avian influenza poultry business across the country has witnessed a massive dip. Outbreak of the disease has created reluctance among the people to purchase poultry products. Sale and transportation of poultry has been restricted in epicentres of bird flu. Shopkeepers in Thiruvananthapuram complained of poor sales of chicken. Though, mutton sales observed a raise as the costing mounted to Rs 800 per kilogram. In Kerala, 25,000 odd birds have died due to the bird flu outbreak in the state. In addition to this, 50,935 birds have been culled to stop the spread of the bird flu.
22nd session of the Kerala Legislative Assembly began in Thiruvananthapuram on January 08. Oppositions created ruckus when Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan delivered his address. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on January 19 said that the government has decided to rename the dragon fruit as 'Kamalam' since it resembles to lotus. According to the CM, the word dragon fruit sounded inappropriate and so the Gujarat government has decided the fruit be called Kamalam. "Farmers say it looks like lotus and that is the reason we have renamed it 'Kamalam. So, the Gujarat government has decided to call the fruit Kamalam," said Chief Minister Rupani. Appreciating the government's decision, a shopkeeper in Ahmedabad said, "It's good that the government has decided to rename the fruit as Kamalam. India and China keep fighting. So, it's better to name it as Indian fruit." Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly radio program Mann Ki Baat in July 2019 had praised the farmers of Kutch for the cultivation of dragon fruit so that India can be self-reliant.

There was no metro policy. As a result, there were different kinds of metro in different cities."
