Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune emerge as new urban Covid hotspots

Among India’s nine largest urban centres (with 5 million plus population), it is now Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune that are witnessing the most rapid rise in Covid cases while the earlier epicentres — Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad — are showing signs of the outbreak slowing down. In Bengaluru, the cases have increased at an average 12.9% per day in the past four weeks.

After Beirut blast, Chennai shifts ammonium nitrate kept at freight station

After Beirut explosion, authorities in Chennai finally swung into action. Almost 700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate reportedly transported to Hyderabad. The 690 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been seized in 2015.Around 10 containers were transported and security personnel accompanied the trucks. The consignment worth Rs 1.8 crore was kept in a Chennai container freight station. It came into the spotlight after the tragedy in Lebanon's capital city. In Beirut, 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored at the port for years. Ammonium nitrate is an explosive chemical also used in fertilisers. It is believed to be the cause of the massive blast which shook Beirut on August 4. The death toll has crossed 150, over 6000 found injured so far, as per reports.

Over 690 tonnes of ammonium nitrate containers placed at Chennai Manali Sattva container freight station are now in spotlight after the massive explosion in Lebanon's capital Beirut earlier this week. Containers loaded with over 180 tons of ammonium nitrate is being to Hyderabad to a (a private company after it was auctioned). Mumbai, on Wednesday, received the highest rainfall of the season within just 12 hours and also the highest-ever recorded wind speed, according to the BMC. Normal life was thrown out of gear in several areas of the city. The area around the Nair hospital was completely waterlogged on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, heavy rain that lashed South Mumbai led to flooding at JJ Hospital, the state’s largest government health facility. Patients, medical staff and the family members of patients were seen wading around through ankle-deep water on the ground floor of the hospital. The patients had to be shifted to the upper floors after the incident. The water was later cleared, the BMC informed. Meanwhile, NDRF rescued passengers who were stranded after two trains coming from opposite directions got stuck between Masjid Bunder and Byculla stations on the Central line. This happened as the tracks were flooded and water had reportedly collected up to 3 feet after incessant rainfall in maximum city. Rains also lashed Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts in western Maharashtra. The MeT department warned of intense spells of 30 to 50 mm rainfall per hour with strong winds in Mumbai and suburban areas. Watch the full video for all the details.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked the Mumbai municipal corporation to stay on high alert in the view of more rain forecast for Thursday. Teams of NDRF have been stationed at many places to deal with any eventualities. Indian Meteorological Department has predicted intense rainfall in Mumbai for the next 48 hours. CM Thackeray has also asked people to stay indoors and venture out only for essential work. He took stock of situation and asked BMC to coordinate with police, railway authorities and NDRF. Thackeray directed authorities to monitor situation arising out of disruption of uprooting of trees, waterlogging.

A massive fire broke out at a COVID care hospital in Gujarat's Ahmedabad on August 06. Around eight people lost their lives, including five men and three women in the fire incident at Shrey Hospital. One paramedic also received burn injuries. Reportedly, the fire occurred due to a short circuit in ICU of the fourth floor of hospital. An inquiry into the matter is underway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakhs each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the kin of the deceased. Rs 50,000 to be given to those injured due to the fire. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakhs each to the families of the eight victims who died in the fire at Shrey Hospital in Ahmedabad. The CMO added that Rs 50,000 would be given to those injured in the incident. Earlier today as per Gujarat Chief Minister's Office, Gujarat Chief Minister has ordered a probe in the incident. "CM Vijay Rupani has ordered a probe in the incident of fire at Shrey Hospital in Ahmedabad. Sangeeta Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department) will be leading the probe. The CM has ordered for a report within 3 days."
