HC breather for Pilot camp till Friday, but Congress readies counter-strike

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot called a cabinet meeting at his residence on Tuesday to review the state’s Covid-19 and financial situation in the state but sources said the cabinet discussed the present political crisis too and gave nod for calling a special session of the state Assembly to pre-empt the Opposition’s alleged moves to topple the government.

Violence broke out in Bengaluru on August 11 late night over an alleged inciting social media post. Residence of Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivasamurthy was attacked during the violence. Srinivasamurthy said, "Yesterday some unknown people set my house on fire, they hurled petrol bombs. Police should investigate and take action against culprits. If this can happen to an MLA, what would happen to others? I have spoken to Home Minister, Police officials and my party leaders over the incident. Action should be taken against accused. All those who did this are not from my constituency, they are outsiders. It will be good if I get security." At least two people died in the violence.

In West Bengal, the state government withdrew the order regarding complete lockdown on August 28. However, lockdown orders remain in operation for August 20, 21, 27 and 31. India's total case tally has crossed 23.29 lakh, while the death toll has crossed 46,000. Over 16.39 lakh patients have been discharged so far. In international news, the discovery of a new case after 102 days in New Zealand has led the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to say that postponement of the upcoming general elections is a possibility. Meanwhile, the Russian government said that the first batch of its Covid vaccine is likely to be released within two weeks. Russia has become the first country to declare a vaccine ready for use.
