June deadline over, MHA seeks 3 months to frame CAA rules

IndiaTimes Sunday, 2 August 2020
Though CAA was passed by both Houses of Parliament on December 11 and a notification issued fixing January 10, 2020, as the date from which the Act would come into effect, the absence of rules has held up implementation of the law that seeks to confer citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who were forced to migrate to India for fear of religious persecution in their home country.

US polls: Kamala Harris' uncle on her Indian roots, views on Kashmir, CAA

Kamala Harris' uncle spoke to Hindustan Times' Rezaul Laskar about his niece's selection as the Vice Presidential candidate by US President-hopeful Joe Biden. A day earlier, Biden, the Democratic candidate taking on incumbent President Donald Trump in the polls in November, announced that Harris, an American of Indian and Jamaican descent, would be his 'running mate'. Gopalan Balachandran said that he sent his niece a congratulatory message saying her mother Shyamala would be proud of her. He also spoke about her ideology, political views and individual strengths. Balachandran spoke on Kamala's Indian roots, saying that she drew inspiration from her mother. He added that one of her strong suits is standing her ground and being able to convince her opponents to join her side. Kamala likes India but that doesn't mean that she'll give a 'free pass' to everything that the country does, he said. Harris hasn't shied away from expressing her opinion on India's domestic issues like the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The United States of America will vote on November 3 in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and widespread anti-discrimination protests. The US is the worst-hit country by the pandemic so far with over 50 lakh cases and 1.62 lakh deaths.

Centre is a 'no data government': Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

During Lok Sabha session, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called Centre a 'no data government'. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, "Government told the Parliament that it didn't maintain any data on deaths of migrant workers who were trying to reach their homes after lockdown. Reports say over 1,000 died. When we ask questions on jobs, govt says it doesn't have data. This is a 'no data govt'." He further said, "More than 2 crores salaried employees have lost their job. 14 lakh workers have no work now. How can we expect growth in such a scenario."

Face-off between BJP, Congress in Lok Sabha over PM Cares Fund [Video]

Face-off between BJP, Congress in Lok Sabha over PM Cares Fund

A war of words broke out between the BJP and Congress over PM CARES Fund in the lower house of Parliament on September 18. Manish Tewari of the Congress said since the trust has the name of the institution of Prime Minister, its creation should have been done through Parliament. "Since the PM CARES Fund has the name of the institution of the Prime Minister attached to it, wouldn't it have been more appropriate if this fund would have been created through legislation rather than as a public trust," Tewari said. Responding to the criticism, Minister of State for Finance, Anurag Thakur, recalled the formation of Prime Minister's National Relief Fund by former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1948. "Nehru ji ordered the creation of Prime Minister's National Relief Fund in 1948 like a royal order but its registration has not been done even till today. How did it get FCRA clearance? PM-CARES Fund is a public charitable trust which has been set up for the people of India. You (Opposition) created trusts for Gandhi family. Nehru and Sonia Gandhi have been members of PM's National Relief Fund. There should be a debate on this," Thakur questioned the Congress party.
