Manoj Sinha to be new lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir: Rashtrapati Bhavan
Thursday, 6 August 2020 Former Union minister Manoj Sinha has been named the new lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on Thursday. Sinha’s appointment comes as G C Murmu abruptly resigned as J&K Lt governor on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated Police Premier League (PPL) T-20 cricket tournament in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar. Director General of Police (DGP) of J-K, Dilbag Singh was also present in the event. 16 teams from Srinagar are participating in the tournament. "16 teams from Srinagar are participating in it. We want youth and children to have some relaxed and healthy moments," DGP said.
Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, announced a package worth Rs 1,350 crore aimed at boosting economic activity in the Union Territory. While the package contains some relief for common people like 50% discount on electricity and water bills for a year, the main beneficiaries are businesspersons, traders, and industrialists. From an interest subvention scheme for all commercial borrowers, to doubling of amount available under the credit card scheme for the handicraft industry, and special efforts to boost tourism - the announcement will help create lakhs of jobs in J&K, as per the L-G. Commenting on the scheme, chief of the J&K Apni Party, Altaf Bukhari, said that Sinha had proven that he was a man of his word by expeditiously bringing in an economic package. However, he added that given the Rs 40,000 crore loss suffered by the UT's economy, the current package was a drop in the ocean, and a 'large heart' was needed to truly revive J&K's economy. Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha announced Rs 1,350 crores economic package for business community who are facing economic difficulties. This will be additional to the benefits of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'. "I am glad to announce Rs 1,350 crores economic package for the people in the business community facing economic difficulties. This is additional to the benefits of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' and other measures taken by us to comfort the business community," said Manoj Sinha. "We have decided to give 5% interest subvention to every borrower from the business community, without any conditions for six months in the current financial year. This will be a huge relief and help in generating employment here," Manoj Sinha said in a press conference at Srinagar.
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad met President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 23. Congress leader provided representation to President about farm bills claiming them to be passed in Upper House 'unconstitutionally'. Speaking to media, Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "There was no division of votes, no voice voting. Constitution was undermined in the temple of democracy." "We have given a representation to President that Farm Bills have been passed unconstitutionally and he should return these bills," he added.
Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee died on Monday. His son, Abhijit Mukherjee made the announcement on social media. The Congress veteran was admitted in a Delhi hospital and had been operated to remove a blood clot in his brain. Mukherjee had also tested positive for Covid-19, earlier in August. Condolences poured in for the former President. President Ram Nath Kovind offered condolences to Mukherjee’s family and friends. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a series of tweets, spoke about Pranab Mukherjee’s contribution towards the nation. PM Modi offered condolences and said the former president was an “outstanding Parliamentarian” who “made Rashtrapati Bhavan even more accessible to common citizens”. Nation on Saturday remembered hockey legend Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and paid tribute to Dhyan Chand on the occasion. Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary is celebrated as National Sports Day. On the occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred National Sports and Adventure Awards 2020. Awards were virtually conferred in a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also paid floral tribute to Dhyan Chand. Rijiju paid the respect at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi. "Today is an important day for all of us, especially the sporting fraternity. Today is the birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. We have decided to increase prize money for both sports, adventure awards," he said. National Sports Day is celebrated every year in India on August 29 since 2012. National Sports Day is celebrated to commemorate Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary. The hockey legend won gold medals in the Olympics for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936. On this day every year, nation honours its sporting heroes with recognitions. Awards include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dhyan Chand, Dronacharya.

The 61-year-old, who is known for his connect with people, particularly in rural areas, was administered the oath of office by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Gita Mittal at a simple function in the Raj Bhavan. "August 5 is a very important day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. After years of isolation, Jammu and Kashmir joined the national mainstream. I have been told that many works that could not be completed in years have been completed in the past one year," Sinha told reporters after taking oath. "I want to accelerate that development," he added. Sinha succeeds former IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu, who resigned on Wednesday night and was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on Thursday.
