India, France decide to expand cooperation in Indian Ocean Region
Thursday, 10 September 2020 () Defence minister Rajnath Singh and his French counterpart Florence Parly on Thursday held extensive talks during which they vowed to step up cooperation in the Indian Ocean, a region which is witnessing rising Chinese military posturing.It is learnt that Singh also apprised Parly on India's four-month-long border row with China in eastern Ladakh.

He said, "India has a vision for Indo-Pacific, as indeed does Japan. Both of us, in many ways, have tried to shape the Indo-Pacific narrative. A new fire broke out on a supertanker carrying about two million barrels of oil in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Sri Lanka, spokesmen for the country's navy said on Thursday (September 3), adding that one of its 23 crew was missing, and another injured. Libby Hogan reports.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on September 04 had one-hour meeting with Russian Defence Minister, Gen Sergey Shoigu, at the Russian Ministry of Defence, Moscow. The meeting covered a broad range of areas of cooperation between the two countries. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on September 10 and Minister of the armed forces of Florence Parly met at Hyderabad House in the national capital. Minister Florence Parly was the chief guest for Rafale induction ceremony held earlier today at Air Force Station, Ambala. The first five Rafale aircraft will be part of 17 Squadron, the "Golden Arrows".The aircraft had arrived at Air Force Station, Ambala from France on July 27, 2020. Parly said it is a great pride to see the first five Rafale jets inducted in time in the Indian Air Force despite the COVID-19 crisis.
Dassault CEO Eric Trappier said he would be happy to repeat orders for Rafale aircraft if Indian Air Force wants. Trappier was speaking during the induction ceremony of Rafale jets. On Thursday, five Rafale aircraft were formally inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF). Meanwhile, French Defence Minister Florence Parly met National Security Advisor (NSA). While addressing at the joint press briefing on Rafale induction ceremony in Haryana's Ambala on September 10, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, "I had a fruitful discussion with Madam minister (Florence Parly) today. We have decided to continue work on identified defence industrial area and military to military cooperation." "I have invited the French defence manufacturers to invest in defence corridors in India," Defence Minister added.
As tension between India and China persists despite talks at various military and diplomatic levels, the Indian Army is ensuring that it is prepared for all eventualities even as the severe Ladakh winter approaches. To complement increased soldier deployment, tanks like the T-90 and the T-72 have reportedly been made operational in the area, along with infantry combat vehicles. These tanks can reportedly operate at temperatures as low as minus 40 degress Celsius. Chief of Staff of the Leh-headquartered 14 Corps, Major General Arvind Kapoor, gave a briefing about the Army's efforts to ensure that soldiers are able to function at optimum levels while battling the extreme chill along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. He listed equipment like special winter clothing, special tents, and heaters, which are being provided to soldiers, along with preparation of special living quarters - some of which can even be moved with helicopters. Meanwhile, tension at various friction points along the LAC continues. Soldiers of both sides are eyeball-to-eyeball at Finger 4, Rezang La-Rechin La ridgeline, and Gogra Hot Springs.
