The 'dargah' of Peer Budan Ali Shah or Peer Baba as it is known, is the perfect example of communal harmony in Jammu and Kashmir. People of all religion throng this shrine and get blessings. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs come to this 'dargah' in large number and pray. There is a belief that the 'dargah' protects people of this city from mishaps and evil spirits. The shrine is located in the outskirts of Jammu city at a distance of about 8 Kilometres towards the aerodrome at Satwari. Baba Budan Shah was born at Talwandi in Punjab, and it is said that another shrine of this Peer is located at Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. In spite of being the 'dargah' of a Muslim saint, Hindus and Sikh devotees who flock this religious place particularly on Thursdays are far greater in number than the Muslim followers. The devotees of Peer Baba have many interesting stories to share.
National Conference president and former chief minister of JandK, Farooq Abdullah, on September 19 said in Lok Sabha that border skirmishes are on a rise in Jammu and Kashmir and talks should be held with other neighbours, like the engagement is taking place with China. "Like we are talking to China to resolve issues, we need to hold talks with the other neighbour country as well. People are dying every day, border skirmishes are on a rise. We need to find some solution," said Abdullah.
Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, announced a package worth Rs 1,350 crore aimed at boosting economic activity in the Union Territory. While the package contains some relief for common people like 50% discount on electricity and water bills for a year, the main beneficiaries are businesspersons, traders, and industrialists. From an interest subvention scheme for all commercial borrowers, to doubling of amount available under the credit card scheme for the handicraft industry, and special efforts to boost tourism - the announcement will help create lakhs of jobs in J&K, as per the L-G. Commenting on the scheme, chief of the J&K Apni Party, Altaf Bukhari, said that Sinha had proven that he was a man of his word by expeditiously bringing in an economic package. However, he added that given the Rs 40,000 crore loss suffered by the UT's economy, the current package was a drop in the ocean, and a 'large heart' was needed to truly revive J&K's economy.
