Pushing Gujjar, Bakarwaal communities to the wall will have disastrous ramifications: Mehbooba Mufti
Monday, 16 November 2020 Mehbooba Mufti visited the upper reaches of Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag on Monday and met people whose temporary shelters were demolished by authorities as part of an anti-encroachment drive.
Two day winter carnival festival kick started in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on February 20. Famous for its scenic beauty, Pahalgam is taking a step forward to promote its tourism through this carnival. Carnival gave a platform to entrepreneurship, as several young entrepreneurs set up their stalls of bakery products, handlooms, street food, photography and tribal art. Women's development corporation, Handloom Handicraft, Horticulture and Floriculture department also set up stalls at the 2-day carnival. Pahalgam's culture was presented through dance and music performances. Carnival attracted hundreds of visitors who enjoyed their time on Day 1.
Tourist footfall is gradually increasing at famous hill town of Pahalgam in Anantnag district of South Kashmir as compared to last two years. Rush of tourists has brought smile to faces of people involved in the industry. Hoteliers, tour and travel operators, house boat owners, boat men, taxi operators were at receiving end due to COVID-19 last year. As situation improves, tourists are choosing Pahalgam for its scenic mountains and snowfall. Pahalgam is situated over 2700 meter above sea level.
An encounter is underway in JandK's Anantnag on February 23. According to JandK Police, four terrorists got killed in the encounter. The encounter began at the Shalgul forest area of Srigufwara in Anantnag district. Further details are awaited.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti asked the Centre to start a dialogue with Pakistan to stop the bloodshed in Jammu and Kashmir. The PDP president visited Logripora Aishmuqam area of in Kashmir’s Anantnag district to express her condolences to the family of J&K Police Constable Suhail Ahmad who was killed in the terrorist attack in the Baghat area of the city on February 19. Besides Ahmad, another police personnel lost his life in the Baghat attack. Mufti said, “Till when the people of J&K, its policemen and youth will continue to sacrifice their lives. This (the Kashmir issue) is a huge issue and this issue should be resolved so that the bloodshed in J&K stops and the people here live in peace.” She added, “The BJP government should think and start the process of dialogue with Pakistan, so that the bloodshed is stopped.” Watch the full video for more.

JandK government has organised a mesmerising night skiing event in Gulmarg district. Gulmarg is world famous ski and tourist resort in north Kashmir of JandK. It will see around 1200 athletes from different parts of the country participating in the second edition of the five-day long 'Khelo India Winter Games'. This event is advance exercise of 'Khelo India Winter Games' programme that will be started officially on February 26. It will attract skiing lovers from across the world. The event is conducted to promote adventure tourism and aimed at engaging the youth in positive and constructive activities. The games include snowshoe race, ice skating, ice hockey, skiing, nordic skiing, snowboarding, ski mountaineering and ice stock. The government has planned many cultural programs as part of the event besides setting up stalls of ethnic food and local crafts. 'Khelo India Winter Games' is being organised by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs And Sports in collaboration with the JandK Sports Council and the Winter Games Association of JandK. While speaking to media, MoS of Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, Kiren Rijiju said, "We want to support our young generation for excellence in sports. We couldn't provide facilities in the past. We are bringing Khelo India here as the place is naturally gifted to organise winter games."
