Unicef: 25% of schoolkids from Covid-hit families may drop out
Wednesday, 18 November 2020 Community volunteers who reached out to 300 habitations in 12 districts across seven states in August- September found children engaged as paid worker or pushed into child labour, the situation being similar in both rural and urban areas. The seven states where the assessment was done are Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra.
Uttar Pradesh managed to control Encephalitis disease by 75 percent and fatality rate by 95 percent, informed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the campaign launch in Varanasi. "In 2017, we started special vaccination program to aware citizens about Encephalitis. As a result, the State managed to control the disease by 75% and death rate by 95%. UNICEF, WHO also supported to make this program a success," said CM Yogi.
Gunmen abducted hundreds of schoolgirls and killed one police officer during a raid on a state-run school in Zamfara State, north-west Nigeria, a government official told CNN. About 500 students are normally at the boarding school, of whom around 315 were taken by the gunmen.

On the occasion of International Women's Day, Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh Municipal Corporation organised two-day'Women Empowerment Fair' in Jawahar Bhawan on March 07. Women artisans displayed their skills and created a large number of handmade materials.'Women Empowerment Fair' proved to be an effective platform to make women self-reliant. Indigenous products of artisans are a major attraction at the fair. Craftsmen have displayed their indigenous products made with clay, glass, wood and clothes. World celebrates the International Women's Day every year on March 08.
District administration with the help of several organisations launched a massive cleaning campaign of Ganga in UP's Varanasi on March 07. As many as 84 Ghats were cleaned up during the campaign. Volunteers took an oath to ensure clean and neat Ganga.
A class 11 student jumped off his 15th-floor apartment and died in UP's Noida. The teen was allegedly battling depression due to his physical looks, skin complexion. The local Sector 49 police station was alerted around 5 am about the incident. Police said the body was sent for autopsy and no complaint has been made by the family. Ranvijay Singh, ADCP, Noida said, “A 17-year-old kid jumped off his apartment and died in Noida Sector 78. His parents said their son had been battling depression due to his skin complexion. The boy's parents were living separately and he was staying with his father.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot received his first dose COVID-19 vaccine on March 05 in Jaipur. "Around 2 lakh people are getting vaccinated each day in Rajasthan. This is due to people's confidence in state's COVID-19 management," he said. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari also took his first jab of vaccine today at a government hospital in Mumbai.
Massive fire broke out at a scrap godown in Gujarat's Rakjot. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames after hours of efforts. No casualties have been reported. The reason of the fire has not been ascertained yet.
An Indian Army helicopter was forced to make a precautionary landing in Gujarat on March 6. The chopper, reportedly carrying top defence officials, landed in a field in Kheda. An official release credited the pilot, Colonel BR Nambiar, with good flying skills. Personnel were deployed at the field to create a cordon around the chopper.

While speaking to media in Chennai on March 08, General Secretary of CPI (M) in Tamil Nadu state, Balakrishnan spoke on seat sharing ahead of the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. Balakrishnan said, "CPI (M) has forged an alliance with DMK and has been allocated six seats for the Assembly elections. We will work on all the 234 seats to defeat the AIADMK-BJP alliance."

A nine-year-old girl from rural Andhra Pradesh has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro. Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the African continent's highest peak. Ritwika Sree of Anantapur became the world's second youngest and Asia's youngest girl to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. She achieved the record accompanied by her father, who is also her guide. Ritwika's father is a cricket coach and sports coordinator. She was trained at the Rock Climbing School at Bhongir, Telangana and received level two training in Ladakh.

Director of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, Prof Jagat Ram said the new Covid-19 strains detected in the country are highly transmissible. "New Covid-19 strains detected in India are highly transmissible. We should take all possible precautions to prevent the rise in cases,” he said. The Centre on February 23 said two new Covid strains were found in Maharashtra, Kerala and Telangana. It, however, said there is no scientific evidence to suggest the new strains are linked to recent surge. The variants, namely N440K and E484K were detected in Maharashtra and Kerala. One of the two Covid variants has also been detected in Telangana. Watch the full video for more.
