After spending four years in jail in connection with disproportionate assets case, former All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader VK Sasikala has been released from the Central Prison, Bengaluru on January 27. Sasikala has been officially released as on 11 am today. She was shifted to Victoria Hospital on January 21 and was tested positive for COVID-19. As per protocol, she will be discharged on 10th day if she is asymptomatic and free of oxygen support for at least 3 days, said Bangalore Medical College. However, Sasikala will remain in the hospital as she is being treated for the COVID-19 infection. Sasikala's advocate, Raja Senthoor Pandian informed, "All formalities have been completed. She is set free from all legal formalities. She will remain at the hospital as per medical advice."
A total of 20,29,480 beneficiaries have been vaccinated in India for COVID-19 by January 27. Country reported 12,689 new COVID-19 cases and 13,320 discharges in last 24 hours. With new infections, the COVID tally of the country stood at 1,06,89,527, with 1,76,498 active cases. Total of 1,03,59,305 patients have been discharged across the country. With 137 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll rose to 1,53,724. A total of 19,36,13,120 samples tested for COVID-19 up to 26th January. Of these, 5,50,426 samples were tested yesterday.
Heavy traffic was reported in parts of Delhi and NCR on January 27. Congestion near Anand Vihar was observed. Vehicles moved in snail-pace at the location. Meanwhile, Delhi-Noida-Delhi (DND) Flyway was also jam-packed. Delhi Traffic Police issued an alert saying, "Two lanes each are closed for traffic from Kalindi Kunj to Noida and Noida to Kalindi Kunj, causing heavy blockage."
Two members of a gang of thieves, who used to steal vehicles, were arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Noida on January 17. The gang has stolen more than 15 vehicles so far.
A 65-year-old woman, who was in Pakistan jail, returned to India after 18 years. Hasina Begum had gone to Pakistan to meet her husband's relatives but landed up in a Pakistani jail after she lost her passport. She returned to India on Tuesday after Aurangabad police filed a report on the matter. She was received by her relatives and Aurangabad police officials upon her return. According to the information received from the police, Begum who is a resident of Rashidpura area under the City Chowk police station limits in Aurangabad is married to Dilshad Ahmed who is a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur. Pakistan released Begum last week and handed her over to Indian authorities.
