UT Lakshadweep, J-K's Budgam first in India to be declared TB-free: Union health minister Harsh Vardhan
Wednesday, 24 March 2021 Lakshadweep and Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district are the first in the country to be declared TB-free, Union health minister Harsh Vardhan Singh said on Wednesday as he called for a "TB Mukt Bharat'.
Two ailing senior citizens, a 67-year-old male from Kavaratti and a 72-year-old female from Androth in Lakshadweep, were brought to the Naval hospital in Kochi on April 30. Both the patients requiring emergency treatment for COVID-19 were air lifted and admitted to INHS Sanjivani hospital.
Even as the nation is struggling against a fresh wave of Covid-19 infections, the Union government announced some good news regarding another disease. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said that 2 regions in India - the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, and Jammu & Kashmir's Budgam district - have been declared tuberculosis free. Amid India's worst Covid wave yet, a sliver of hope emerged. The Union government revealed districts without new cases in weeks. 32 districts have not seen any new cases in almost a month. The Union health minister revealed the stats during ministers' meet. “For the last 7 days, 180 districts haven't seen new cases. 18 districts haven't seen new cases in the last 14 days. 54 districts haven't seen new cases in the last 21 days and 32 districts have not seen new cases in the last 28 days,” said Harsh Vardhan. Rasiq Imtiyaz Khan from the Wathora area of Budgam District shares his journey as a singer and music composer. Like many other budding singers in the Valley, the journey wasn't easy for him. Concerned about the future of aspiring singers in the valley, Rasiq said "I want to appeal the government to look into this matter as economically we are down. If I run a studio here, I need that support from the government so that I can move forward and train the younger talented singers and promote them."
To empower women of Budgam, Indian Army has established a women training centre. These women make Kashmiri Shawls and embroidery work to earn livelihood. The aim of the training centre is to create a sustainable skill development program which will facilitate employment of Kashmiri women in various industries and will also provide platform for employment to the women of Kashmir. These women came from various areas of Budgam to work in this centre and to make beautiful designs of Kashmiri Shawls and embroidery items and earn their livelihood. Army provides all the needed materials at the centre and also helps these women to sell the final products in markets.
